Need For Speed: Shift Marks New Beginning

By Dave Taylor

The Need for Speed series of games is one of the longest running racing game series, and Need for Speed: Shift brings a new developer that hopes to re-invigorate the series. Slightly Mad Studios has a good pedigree in racing games, having worked on GTR2 under a different name.

Although Need for Speed: Shift is a racing game, there will be an almost RPG element to it with the new Driver's Experience, which will shape the Career Mode based upon your driving style. Overtake aggressively and you'll be known for it, whereas clean passes will give you a reputation as a precise driver.

Customisation is set to play a big part in Need for Speed: Shift too, with almost every aspect of a car, from tyres to aerodynamics, set to be available for tweaking. It's not as if there won't be a selection of cars to choose from in the first place, either as there 65 cars in the roster, including models from Lamborghini, Lotus, BMW, Nissan and more. It's an impressive list of cars.

To showcase the variety of cars, and therefore the driving gameplay, that Need for Speed: Shift is going to offer, EA has released screens of two cars that have gamers excited: the Nissan Skyline and the McLaren F1, both of which look very realistic.

The level of attention to detail in the cockpit of the cars matches that of the external models, with even an air conditioning button active in there. It doesn't do anything, but you can flick it on and off as if it were real. The aim has been to lift Need for Speed: Shift to a level of realism not seen before in the franchise.

In addition to the real life cars, EA and the developers have been talking to racing teams and names from around the world. EA just released a set of Driver's Experience videos with drivers showing off their passion for driving.

Need for Speed: Shift is being released in September 2009 on Xbox 360, PS3, PC and PSP.
